Mathematics Education at Boise State University

Faculty in the mathematics education group include Margaret Kinzel, Thomas Kinzel, Laurie Cavey, Sasha Wang,  Joe Champion, Jennifer Buchholz, and Brinley Stringer. The group supports Math Outreach, partners with K-12 schools, and conducts research broadly focused on student learning, instruction, and mathematics teacher education.

Recent mathematics education faculty projects have focused on:

  • K-12 professional development for in-service math teachers
  • Preservice math teachers’ reflective practice 
  • Instructional practices that enhance students’ sense of belonging in early STEM coursework
  • Transitions between high school and undergraduate mathematics
  • Undergraduate advising and program development in mathematics

The department offers mathematics education emphasis options in the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and the Master of Science in Mathematics programs.
