Mathematics Education Emphasis

Students choosing the Mathematics Education emphasis in the Master of Science in Mathematics degree work closely with expert faculty to build advanced knowledge and skills for careers in industry, government, and academia.

Required Emphasis Courses

In addition to the core courses, take at least 2 of the following:

  • MATHED510 – Mathematics Curriculum (3)
  • MATHED523 – Teaching and Learning Algebra and Functions (3)
  • MATHED525 – Teaching and Learning Calculus (3)
  • MATHED526 – Teaching and Learning Statistics (3)

Faculty Expertise

Students who choose this emphasis work with faculty in the Mathematics Education group to design a customized degree plan. The faculty teach many of the courses in the program, offer mentoring and research opportunities, and advise students in their culminating activity (typically a thesis or project).

Personal Quote: “Starting my master’s degree 25 years after I graduated with my bachelor’s degree was a bit intimidating. However, the faculty and staff in the Department of Mathematics at Boise State were amazing! They supported me through everything I needed to do. I felt like I belonged there, even though I was a non-traditional student. When I started my program, I hadn’t planned to go back to teaching in the classroom. But after participating in a couple key courses and learning about the most recent research in math education, I was so intrigued. I knew I had to try out these ideas for myself. I am now teaching DC Statistics, Data Science, and Integrated Math 2 & 3 at a local Charter High School. I use the skills and knowledge I learned during my master’s program every day I walk into the classroom. And even now, almost 2 years after graduating, I’ll reach out to my professors on occasion to get their professional opinions on things I want to try in my classroom. I’ve made lifelong connections at BSU.”
